Tania Bruguera: Patria y Libertad

Hoy Cuba entra en una nueva etapa, una etapa que requiere que pasemos de la anécdota
al dato histórico, del rumor a la investigación, de las pasiones a los hechos, de lo
simbólicamente asumido a lo concretamente realizado.

Ha llegado el momento de pedir que se abran los archivos, que se sepa hasta dónde una
verdad fue construída y hasta donde una victoria fue ganada, que podamos contar con
certeza nuestros muertos por el mundo, podamos entender nuestros avances sociales y
que sepamos qué acuerdos toma el gobierno en nuestro nombre.

El pueblo Cubano tiene derecho a saber su historia, toda y a poder sacar sus propias
conclusiones.

Hoy los cubanos han dejado de ser niños que esperan órdenes.

Pero no aceptar que nos subestimen requiere entender el sentimiento de los otros, de los
que piensan y sienten diferente a uno, es entender que no vas a tener siempre la razón y
que discutir no es para ganar sino para aclararse las ideas y para ponerlas a
consideración.

Tenemos que parar de pensar que nuestros sentimientos son los únicos válidos porque el
proyecto de La Revolución ha sido una experiencia diferente para cada uno de nosotros y
todas por ser experiencias han sido válidas, hay cosas que rescatar y cosas que eliminar.
Sería mucho más interesante ver cómo se ha procesado la experiencia, que se ha hecho
con ella, en vez de negarle a alguien lo que siente.

Tenemos que empezar a decir que no a lo que no nos parece bien, a lo que no nos hace
sentir limpios y honestos aunque esto nos lleve a perder una posición de privilegio, porque
ningún dinero, ninguna oportunidad profesional, ningún comfort material se compara con
sentirse libre con poder decir lo que uno piensa, sin miedo.

Pero el proyecto de vida que podemos crear a partir de ahora sólo es posible si dejamos
de tener doble moral, si dejamos de decir una cosa para unos y otra para otros.

Tenemos ante nosotros un momento único en el que defender no a un gobierno o una
oposición, sino donde crear todos juntos una visión para Cuba, que no sea extrema de un
lado o de otro sino que sea una compilación de todas nuestras visiones.

Es el momento de crear una infraestructura legal que incluya el respeto a la diferencia de
opinión y que no permita nunca más el odio político. Donde un gobierno no tenga control
de los afectos de sus ciudadanos sino que sea un espacio donde encontrar decisiones
justas e inclusivas.

Es el momento de crear una infraestructura política que garantice que nunca más exista
un presidente que tenga todos los poderes como ha sucedido en Cuba tres veces desde
1902 y piense que sabe mejor que nadie qué es lo correcto para todos.

Es el momento de crear una infraestructura social y cívica que incluya a todos, que
incluya los derechos para todos, que incluya el disentir como un derecho ciudadano, que
incluya una alfabetización cívica.

Es el momento de crear una infraestructura emocional que dé espacio para entendernos,
una estructura que no permita que nada nos horrorice o nos minimice.

Una estructura que permita la solidaridad y la privacidad, los derechos personales y los
derechos sociales, donde la vida que quieres es respetada pero es también un esfuerzo
conjunto, una estructura que permita las verdades y las demandas que tienen todos: la
mayoría pero también la minoría.

Un lugar donde exista la utopía humanista pero nunca más la paranoia ciudadana.
Donde las emociones no interrumpan lo justo.

Hoy empieza el verdadero trabajo de todos los cubanos: hacer un balance de lo que
queremos rescatar y lo que queremos cambiar, es el momento para dejar de decir
nuestras esperanzas en voz baja, es el momento de no sentir miedo.

El mejor homenaje que podemos hacerle a nuestra patria y a nosotros mismos, es no ser
nunca más sumisos, es nunca más ser una nación cínica, nunca más una nación donde
hayan varias categorías de cubanos, ni una nación de donde haya que irse; sino un lugar
donde la vida sea un acto digno del que estamos orgullosos.

Poner el amor, la familia, la amistad por encima de la ideología es la única manera en la
que Cuba podrá ser de nuevo patria.

Homeland and Freedom

Today in Cuba, we start a new phase, a phase that requires us to transition (shift) from an
anecdote to historic data, from rumor to research, from passion to facts from what was
symbolically assumed to what was actually done.

Time has come for us to ask for that archives be opened, to know how many truths were
manufactured and to what extent victories were achieved, to know with certainty how
many Cubans have died around the world, to understand what social progress we have
made and to learn which agreements the government has made on our behalf.

The Cuban people have the right to know its history, all of it, and be able to draw their own
conclusions.

Today Cubans have stopped being children waiting for orders.

However, refusing to be underestimated requires understanding other people’s feelings,
those that think and feel differently. It means understanding that we are not always right
and that the goal of discussion is not to win arguments but to clarify our ideas and send
them out for consideration..

We need to stop thinking that only our feelings are valid because the project of The
Revolution has been a different experience for each and every one of us, and since they
were experiences, all of them are valid. There are things to rescue and things to remove. It
would be more interesting to see howpeople have dealt with their experiences, what they
have done with them, instead of denying someone to feel in their own terms.

We need to start saying “no” to the things we don’t like, to the things that keeps us from
feeling clean and honest, even if this means losing a privileged position, because there’s
no money, no professional opportunity, no material comfort that can be compared to
feeling free, to being able to speak one´s mind.

But the life project that we can create from now on is only possible if we allow ourselves to
stop having double standard ethics, if we stop telling something to some people and then
something different to others.

We have an exceptional moment before us, not to defend a government or a position, but
to create all together a vision for Cuba; one that is not biased to either extreme, a vision
that can be a compilation of all our points of view.

It is the time to create a new legal infrastructure that includes respect for different opinions
and stops political hate forever, that ensures that citizens’ preferences cannot be
controlled by the government; that can be a space for fair and inclusive decisions.

It is the time to create a political infrastructure that guarantees that never again a president
can hold all powers. This has happened 3 times in Cuba since 1902. There should never
be another president who thinks he knows better than anyone, and what is better for us all.

This is the time to create a civic and social infrastructure that includes everyone, that
includes rights for everyone, that includes political dissent as a civic right, that includes
civic literacy.

It is the time to create an emotional infrastructure that nurtures room for mutual
understanding, a structure that does not allow anything to horrify or minimize us.
A structure that allows solidarity and privacy, individual rights and social rights where the
life we want to have is respected but also represents a common effort; a structure that
allows truths and claims from everyone, the majority but also the minority. A place where a
humanist utopia exists but never again paranoia among its citizens, where emotions don’t
compromise what is fair.

Today, there is a real task for Cubans to complete: to balance what we want to rescue and
what we want to change. It is the time to stop whispering our hopes, it is time to stop being
afraid.

The best way to honor our homeland and ourselves is not being submissive, not being a
cynical nation, never again being a nation with different classes of Cubans, nor a place
from where to leave, but a place where life is a dignifying act we are proud of.
Placing love, family and friendship above ideologies is the only way Cuba will be a nation
again.
